States where the young can't find employment

By Michael B. Sauter, Alexander E. M. Hess and Lisa Nelson, 24/7 Wall St.

Unemployment in the United States has been a hot-button issue since the Great Recession left millions out of work. While the employment picture has begun to improve, albeit slowly, one group that still is in particular trouble is those aged 20 to 24 years old.

While unemployment rates rose during the recession, they shot up much more dramatically for the part of our population that had just graduated from college. In several states, the unemployment for young Americans is alarmingly high. 24/7 Wall St.reviewed?historical unemployment data for the U.S.?population?aged 20 to 24 by?state?to identify the 10 states with the most unemployed young people.

Unemployment trends among young Americans tracks with national trends. Between 2009 and 2010, the national rate rose from 9.3 percent to 9.6 percent, while the rate for those 20 to 24 increased from 14.7 percent to 15.5 percent. Between 2010 and 2011, the national job market showed signs of recovery and the unemployment rate fell to 8.9 percent. In that same period, the rate for young adults fell to 14.6 percent -- a rate still nearly double that of the country as a whole.

Historically, things are as bad for young adults in these states as they have been in at least 29 years. Compared to 2001, when the nation was in the middle of its last major recession, the national unemployment rate was roughly the same as it was in 2011. However, the unemployment rate for 20 to 24 year olds was substantially higher. In nine of the states on our list, unemployment rates among this age group were higher than in 1981. In four cases, it is five percentage points higher.

There appear to be several common trends among the states on our list. Those states with high unemployment among the young have some of the highest proportions of residents without at least a high school diploma. All of the top three states with high youth unemployment were among the 10 with the lowest percentage of 20 to 24 year olds with high school diplomas.

24/7 Wall St.: Cities where homes cost less than a car

These states are also, for the most part, extremely poor. Six of them have among the lowest median income in the country. Mississippi, which had the highest youth unemployment in the country in 2011, also had the lowest median income in the country in 2010, the most recent available year. As evidence of the extreme poverty in these states, many of these states have among the highest percentages of residents receiving food stamps. In Tennessee, for example, 17 percent of residents received food stamps in 2010, the second-highest proportion in the country.

24/7 Wall St.?reviewed?historical unemployment figures for each of the 50 states provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify the ten states with highest unemployment rates in 2011 among?residents 20 to 24.?The BLS provides unemployment rates for a variety of age groups, including those aged 16 to 19. However, these ages were excluded because such a large percentage has yet to enter the job market. 24/7 Wall St.?also?examined overall unemployment rates for 2009, 2010 and 2011 from the BLS. Statistics on educational attainment, median income and poverty from the U.S. Census Bureau?were also reviewed.

These are the 10 states where young people cannot find work.

1. Mississippi

  • ?Unemployment rate ages 20 to 24:?22.2 percent
  • ?Total unemployment rate:?10.7 percent
  • ?Total unemployed ages 20 to 24:?28,000
  • ?Percent less than high school diploma:?20.3 percent

Unemployment for those aged 20 to 24 has been a problem?for?Mississippi in previous years, and it further increased by 4.4 percentage points between 2010 and 2011. The total unemployment rate in the state has been higher than the national average for the past three years. Mississippi has a very low proportion of people who have attained a bachelors degree or higher -- less than 20 percent of those 25 or older had attained higher education as of 2010, the second lowest in the country. Highly correlated to education is income, and Mississippi had the country?s smallest median income of $36,851 in 2011.

2. Alabama

  • ?Unemployment rate ages 20 to 24:?20.2 percent
  • ?Total unemployment rate:?9 percent
  • ?Total unemployed ages 20 to 24:?43,000
  • ?Percent less than high school diploma:?19.9 percent

Alabama?s overall unemployment rate of 9 percent in 2011 was only slightly above the U.S.?average?of 8.9 percent. However, young people were not as competitive as the rest of the state?s labor force, with an unemployment rate well above the national rate of 14.6 percent for those aged 20 to 24. The year prior, Alabama had the nation?s worst unemployment rate for this age group at 20.9 percent. Though Alabama no longer qualifies as the worst state for young job seekers, the number of Alabamians who were unemployed fell by just 2,000 between 2010 and 2011, after rising by 22,000 between 2007 and 2011.

3. South Carolina

  • ?Unemployment rate ages 20 to 24:?19.9 percent
  • ?Total unemployment rate:?10.3 percent
  • ?Total no.?unemployed?ages 20 to 24:?46,000
  • ?Percent less than high school diploma:?19.7 percent

South Carolina?s unemployment rate?for people aged 20 to 24 has ranked among the 10 highest in the country, for each of the past five years. Close to 20 percent of 18 to 24 year olds in South Carolina had not completed high school as of 2010.

24/7 Wall St.: Countries where people work least

4. North Carolina

  • ?Unemployment rate ages 20 to 24:?19.6 percent?
  • ?Total unemployment rate:?10.5 percent
  • ?Total no.?unemployed?ages 20 to 24:?93,000
  • ?Percent less than high school diploma:?18.3 percent

Last year, the unemployment rate for people aged 20 to 24 was five percentage points higher in North Carolina than the nationwide rate of 14.6 percent. Between 2007 and 2011, the proportion of North Carolinians in this age group who were unemployed more than doubled, rising from 8.3 percent to 19.6 percent over four years. This increase of 11.3 percentage points was the second highest among all states in the country for that period. The number of unemployed young workers in that age range rose by roughly 58,000 statewide at that time. In order to better prepare young adults for work, North Carolina, along with Tennessee and four other states, joined the Pathways to Prosperity Network. The Network aims ?to help young people get jobs by focusing on career preparation for high school students who do not go to college.

5. Tennessee

  • ?Unemployment rate ages 20 to 24:?18.3 percent
  • ?Total unemployment rate:?9.2 percent
  • ?Total no.?unemployed?ages 20 to 24:?54,000
  • ?Percent less than high school diploma:?16.5 percent

For Tennessee?s youth, the unemployment rate went up 2.7 percentage points between 2010 and 2011, the second-highest jump in the country. The state has some of the smallest proportions of people holding bachelors or advanced degrees, and the second-highest proportion of people on food stamps or enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program at 17 percent. Tennessee?s state government has recently undertaken an initiative called the Pathways to Prosperity Network.

Android Market Share In The U.S. - Business Insider

Google's Android market share may have peaked in the U.S., according to a Strategy Analytics report via TechCrunch.

Last quarter Android's U.S. smartphone share was 56.3% of all sales, down from 60.6% a year prior. Meanwhile, the iPhone's share came in at 33.2%, up from 23.2% the year prior.

This is an impressive gain for Apple, especially considering the company sold fewer iPhones than expected.

When Apple releases the newly redesigned iPhone, we expect it to take even more share.

Policy action hopes drive Italy yields lower at auction

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's 10-year funding costs fell below 6 percent for the first time since April at an auction on Monday as hopes for a stronger crisis response from policymakers spurred demand for the debt of vulnerable euro zone members.

Spanish and Italian yields retreated from peaks hit early last week after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Thursday said he would do whatever was necessary to defend the euro, including tackling high government funding costs.

Similar expressions of commitment to the single currency by the leaders of Germany, France and Italy have reinforced expectations for steps to support Italian and Spanish bond markets.

The ECB meets on Thursday but the timing and nature of any further action is uncertain. Germany is opposed to a resumption of the ECB's secondary market bond-buying programme and euro zone officials have said September is shaping up to be a "make-or-break" month for the crisis.

Italy sold 5.48 billion euros in bonds, near the top of its planned issue range, meeting demand for 1.4 times that amount.

Benchmark 10-year borrowing costs fell to 5.96 percent from 6.19 percent at a similar auction a month ago.

"On balance, not an unreasonable set of results," said Richard McGuire a rate strategist at Rabobank in London.

"Despite the welcome dip in yields, though, Italy's cost of borrowing remains decidedly elevated. ... Overall, then, while these sales do provide some indication of an easing of tensions at the periphery, they also show considerable further progress on this front is needed."

Five-year borrowing costs eased to 5.29 percent from 5.84 percent at an auction held during a period of uncertainty before a European Union summit at the end of June.

Both five- and 10-year auction yields hit their lowest level since April.

Italy also sold 750 million euros of a November 2015 bond no longer issued on a regular basis.

Last Tuesday Italy's 10-year yields hit their highest since January at 6.6 percent as investors fretted about the cost of a potential sovereign bailout for Spain and the impact this could have on Italy and on the future of the single currency.

Analysts say that any disappointment following the ECB meeting on Thursday would trigger a new bout of bond selling.

"I think markets have enough confidence in the ECB to give it a few days. If nothing were to happen, though, yields would start rising again," said ING strategist Alessandro Giansanti.

Burdened with a 2 trillion euro debt and in the grip of recession, Italy has seen its debt costs track Spain's higher as Madrid struggles to retain market access amid budget troubles.

Should Madrid seek further aid after a bank bailout of up to 100 billion euros, investors' attention would turn to Italy, whose economy is twice that of Spain's and whose funding needs are much larger, totaling 450 billion euros this year.

With Monday's sale the Treasury has met around 64 percent of its annual goal.

A broad domestic investor base has helped Italy cope with shrinking foreign demand for its debt.

Large coupon payments and the Treasury's decision to cancel a mid-August bond sale due to thin liquidity during the summer season likely supported demand at Monday's sale.

10 cheap ways to increase your home's resale value

Cleaning up, finding the right real estate agent, and updating small things? like light fixtures will help your home sell fast without expensive staging.

That?s right, I have two homes to sell: the house I live in now and the house I grew up in. My current home has been on the market for more than a year, and my family home since a month after my mother?s death. But despite showings, open houses, and those historically low mortgage rates, neither has sold.

But I?m confident that will change ? because I recently consulted professionals whose advice should help me sell faster. Implementing some of their advice would cost hundreds, but some could be cheap or free?

1. All the world?s a stage

Let?s start with the potentially most expensive. Staging a home is just about making it more like an uncluttered luxury hotel suite and less like your family?s home. Do it on the inside and outside and your home will probably sell faster and for more.

2. Find the right professional

Sometimes you forget the obvious: The best, smartest thing a homeowner can do is find the right real estate agent for them. There are all kinds of pros out there, with all kinds of approaches and personalities. So how do you find the perfect fit? The easiest ways are also free:

  • Get referrals. Obviously, the easiest step is simply to ask friends and family. But be careful, because an agent who did well selling your sister?s fixer-upper isn?t necessarily the best one to sell your four-bedroom raised ranch. Agents can specialize not only in geography but also in price ranges.
  • Go to open houses. In this case, you aren?t checking out the home, but the agent. And don?t fret that you aren?t interested in the house ? smart agents know they?re also selling themselves at open houses.
  • Go online. If those first two options aren?t working for you, search sites like RealEstateAgent.com and Realtor.com. When you find a few agents you might like, check them out online before contacting them. Are their websites professional-looking and inviting? Do they promote their properties well? Then call them. If the conversation goes well, set up a meeting. But remember, you have to feel comfortable, because this individual is helping you sell your most expensive possession.

3. Clean and de-clutter

?Cleaning is obvious ? we shouldn?t even have to mention that a dirty kitchen or bathroom will cost you customers. But clutter is another matter. Step back and try to look at your home the way someone else would for the very first time. The half-dead philodendron? Toss it out. That old ratty hassock? Goodwill.

And what about the garage? If you use it to store everything but your car, clean it out so a prospective buyer can imagine pulling their own vehicle in there. (Although they?ll probably do just like you and use it for storage.)

4. Maximize your home?s curb appeal

Mow the lawn. Trim the shrubs. Buy a new welcome mat.?Add a hanging plant next to your entrance, or some large terra-cotta pots filled with colorful blooms. This is crucial - online pictures of your front door will likely be the introduction to prospective buyers.

5. Invest in a friend

If a professional home staging profession is too expensive, ask a friend or your real estate agent to come in and give an honest assessment of your home. Having someone objective look at what you see everyday can yield results regarding items or spaces you as a homeowner have become blind to.

6. Create rooms

Substituting one room?s use for another is a cheap way to transform a three-bedroom home with a den into a four-bedroom home. If it doesn?t have a closet, add an armoire. Or maybe your home has a formal dining room that?s never used. Add doors if it doesn?t have them and a freestanding wardrobe ? and you?ve got an instant main floor master bedroom.

7. Paint

Nothing can instantly transform a room like a new coat of paint. That?s especially true if you?re going from something dark and dingy (and scratched and dirty) to something light, bright, and white. Painting is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to change and improve a room?s appearance. Anyone can do it. I know, because I have. A bedroom upstairs and the kitchen and dining room in my main house, and two bedrooms in my parents? home. HUGE difference.

8. Bring the outdoors in and take the indoors out

Plant the decorative plants not just in the ground around the deck, but inside. Furnish your seating areas outside with things you would normally find indoors, like soft cushions. Bridging the inside and the outdoors expands the feel of your home.

9. Add storage

New homebuyers are always looking for storage space. Maximize what you have by adding a closet storage system, incorporating shelves, two-tiered hangers, and the like. Storage doesn?t have to be deep to be useful. Open up a space between studs and walls, install shelving, and you?ve got the perfect place for a series of small shelves to store CDs and DVDs.

10. Lights, camera, action!

Ceiling fixtures tend to get hung, then forgotten, which means they look dated before long. Inexpensive replacements from a home improvement store can brighten up the interior and make a room look more current.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney is calling Jerusalem "the capital of Israel" and is pledging to stand with the U.S. ally.

The U.S. presidential candidate says in a speech in Jerusalem that America must stand with Israel. The Republican says both countries believe in democracy, the rule of law and opposition to Iran becoming a nuclear power.

Romney also is calling Israel "the startup nation."

Jerusalem is a flashpoint in the region. Both Israelis and Palestinians have claimed rights to the city.

Romney says the United States must be "unapologetic ambassadors" to push to advance the values that the United States and Israel share. Romney says the United States will always stand with Israel, including its insistence that Jerusalem be the cornerstone of Israel.

Gunmen take over Sanaa interior ministry building: official

SANAA (Reuters) - About 100 armed tribesmen stormed the Interior Ministry building in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Sunday demanding to be enlisted in the police force, a ministry official said.

The tribesmen, who have taken control of the building, briefly held some employees hostage before freeing them a few hours later, the official said, but they were still occupying the building.

Tribesmen have fought alongside government troops in a U.S.-backed offensive against al Qaeda-linked militants that drove insurgents out of several towns in the south of the country last month. Many tribal fighters also sided with former President Ali Abdullah Saleh who was toppled by a popular uprising.

Fatherly advice/Dr. Michael O'Donnell Urges Two-Parent Homes for ...

HOUSTON CHRONICLE, Section State, Page 2, 2 STAR Edition

By JEAN PAGEL (with Associated Press)

Dear Dad, you?re falling down on the job.

Show a bit more respect to Mom. Praise daughters with the same kudos that sons get. Above all, spend time with your kids.

Advice like that ? from the Southwest Center for Fathering at Abilene Christian University ? aims to demystify fatherhood and make men realize just how crucial they are for their children.

The center echoes a line from the chorus of trendy ?family values? speeches these days: Two-parent homes tend to promote stability and happiness.

?I know it?s not politically correct,? said Michael O?Donnell, the center?s [former] executive director. ?It feels sanctimonious to say that one form of family is better. But research backs it up.?

O?Donnell collects data on fathering in an array of manila folders and videotapes.

It is here ? where O?Donnell incorporates that data for Christian and secular seminars.

The seminars train men to conduct seven-week sessions for wanna-be-better dads. About 400 men have earned ? certification to lead such fathering groups at churches and social agencies nationwide.

Men come to the groups for peer support, O?Donnell said. They leave with heavy doses of parental platitudes (consistency, awareness, nurture) and assignments, such as reading bedtime stories to their children.

?We?re finding the male presence is stabilizing, dynamic, brings balance,? O?Donnell said. ?We tell men the greatest gift they can give their children is to love their mother.?

What?s evident, he said, is that children suffer when their busy dads ignore them or desert the home.

Father absenteeism exacerbates a child?s academic struggles, low self-esteem and aggressive behavior, O?Donnell said. Boys tend to take up drug use; girls become more sexually promiscuous.

?The two-parent family is still the best social institution ever invented to rear children,? he said. ?We don?t want to burden single moms, but we shouldn?t hold them up as the ideal.?

Not necessarily, says the National Women?s Law Center.

Nancy Duff Campbell, co-president of the Washington, D.C.-based group, applauded efforts to get men involved with family life. But she emphasized that good families need not resemble Ward and June Cleaver?s.

?We do take issue with the assertion that a two-parent family is always better than a single-parent family, or anything in any way that would demonize single-parent families that are doing a good job,? she said.

The U.S. Census Bureau counted 3.4 million Texas children in two-parent homes in 1990.

Single mothers in Texas were raising 758,617 children that year, the census said. Homes headed by single Texas fathers contained 155,196 children.

O?Donnell said America has begun holding men accountable. The wakeup call goes beyond political rhetoric and feel-good television ads, he said.

O?Donnell, [former] president of the Texas Council on Family Relations, [had taken] his pro-Dad message to the United Nations. He ? summarize[d] feedback from more than 4,000 well-adjusted teen-agers, who said in surveys they feel less stressed growing up with two parents at home.

His point in Vienna: The world faces a potential fathering crisis, especially in war-torn nations.

But Luther Cammack in Abilene already sees an improved outlook.

Cammack, 67, has adopted his 10-year-old grandson. Together they worked on school projects and built a prize-winning Boy Scout derby car, Cammack bragged.

Sessions with a fathering group persuaded him to allot special time for his grandkids ? time he didn?t spend with his own four children years ago, he said.

?It?s more fun,? Cammack said. ?We play catch. I can catch a ball better now than I could in high school.?

David Cory, community organization specialist for Children?s Protective Services in Abilene, pointed out that children need adult role models from both sexes.

Cory said his agency?s No. 1 problem arises when fathers shrug off their financial and emotional duties.

He offered a pre-Father?s Day word of advice for men who put in too many hours at the office.

?They?ve got a precious gift,? Cory said. ?The reward that they get from spending time (with their kids) will last a lot longer.?

EYES ON LONDON: Bond, queen, Beatles: Games begin

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

LENNON'S TAKE

Finally: The Beatles make an appearance in the story of Britain. Which begs the question: What would John Lennon think of all this? Would he love it or skewer it?

He'd probably manage to do both at once.

CLICHE ? BUT OK

So far a lot of the British cliches have come out, but they have been subtle. The NHS, the worker, the British nanny and Mr. Bean. It is a reflection of all things British but it is also a way of telling the world what we gave them.

Of course, we wouldn't boast. But a little reminder now and again doesn't hurt.

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

___

HER MAJESTY

The queen sure knows how to draw a crowd. As she allegedly parachuted down to Olympic Park, a mad rush of those outside the stadium ensued.

Observers sprinted to the area, hoping to catch a glimpse.

"It's the queen!"

Alas, "she" landed too far away to be seen by most outside the arena.

BRITAIN'S NHS

In Britain, you'll often hear gripes about waiting lists, wards and distant dates for operations. But don't read too much into that. There's little the country cherishes more than its National Health Service ? introduced as a free health care system after World War II. That tribute just now at the opening ceremony will have gone down very well in the UK.

? Ian Phillips ? Twitter ? http://twitter.com/phillipsian

___

COMPRESSED STORYTELLING

Rarely in any forum but the Olympics is an entire country distilled in one performance. In short: You don't usually see medieval farmers, National Health Service nurses, James Bond and an evil "Harry Potter" character in one place. Plus: Molten metal and Mary Poppins. How do you choose from more than a millennium of history? What important stuff gets left out?

THEY'RE REALLY NURSES

Some of the nurses dancing in this segment of the opening ceremony aren't just dancers. They're ... nurses.

BOND. JAMES BOND

The crowd went absolutely wild at "Good Evening Mister Bond." If there are two things that many Britons love right now it is the Queen and James Bond. Put them together and you are on a winner. More surprisingly I cannot remember the Queen

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

___

JUST LIKE BEING THERE

A technologically savvy volunteer worker did his best to circumvent not having a ticket to the big show.

He stood just across the bridge from the stadium and streamed the ceremony on his cell phone. A crowd of six more disenfranchised workers quickly gathered around him.

"That's 10 a piece please," Timothy Harris joked.

Thank heaven for technology. He worried his power may run out before the show ended, so he was lining up others for potential replacements.

As the helicopters lowered the glowing rings into the stadium everyone oohed and awwwed.

"That is fantastic," Harris said. "Well done guys."

So close, but so far away.

"It's seriously sad," one woman said.

A CONSUMING TALE

This is really showing the unique story of Britain and Britons. A mix of humble workers and aristocracy. It isn't over the top; it is understated yet somehow powerful.

Brits don't like to overplay things. The silence of the narrative says everything that needs to be said.

And yet: I just noticed that my foot has been beating the rhythm this whole time.

HIGH-SPEED HISTORY

It is really incredible to see the transformation into an industrial society. So shocking. It must have been like this for the people of rural England in some way, really. It was all happening so quickly. Things familiar, then suddenly so dark. And scary.

A group of 10 Nigerians didn't let a few rain drops, or the fact that they didn't have tickets to the opening ceremony, dampen their spirits.

They laughed, danced, clapped their hands and sang songs near the entrance to Olympic Park.

They yelled in unison: "We represent Nigeria!"

JERUSALEM

The first song, Jerusalem, is often used when England needs its own anthem. God Save The Queen is actually the British National Anthem. This is a real nod to England, but there's a lot of Irish, Welsh and Scottish imagery on show too.

RUGBY!

The scene moments before the ceremony begins: The sheep and other animals are leaving. The cameras are still flashing. Around the stadium people in old-fashioned clothes are playing rugby. Besides football (as we call it here) rugby is one of the most popular team sports in Britain. And we invented it.

RETICENT BRITS

Brits are a little stubborn by nature. The part of the proceedings labelled "Audience Training" where they are told what to do is interesting because they are really throwing themselves into the practice tasks they are being given.

They'll be controlling big bouncy balls thrown into the stands and passing large silk sheets over their heads.

The final word from the people giving instructions: "DO participate."

PERFORMERS PREPARE

Behind Olympic Stadium lies a staging area for some participants in the opening ceremony. They gather and hear an encouraging organizer yell through a megaphone: "Break a leg!"

Then they walk a bridge over the River Thames and into the stadium. It's quite a breathtaking entrance for the biggest show on the planet, and some just have to let out primal screams as they prepare for their big moment.

CEREMONY SECURITY

Security lines, or lack thereof, are moving easily at the Olympic Park. It does feel a bit like stumbling onto a military base ? fresh-faced young soldiers in uniform are everywhere, and every single X-ray machine and scanner is manned by soldiers rather than other organizing committee staff.

So many soldiers that some are just standing around, waiting for a crushof spectators that has not yet materialized.

New York City yoga instructors can relax; their classes aren't taxable ...

New York City yoga instructors who've been tied up in knots about the possibility that their sessions would be taxed can relax.

Tax officials have determined that yoga isn't officially exercise.

Yoga_Dmitriy-Shironosov_iStock_000015998732XSmall Yoga practice by Dmitriy Shironosov via iStock

That's not a slam at yoga, which can indeed work up a sweat and help devotees lose weight. I can attest to that.

But from a tax standpoint, the no-exercise determination is a good thing. It means that yoga classes are exempt from the Big Apple's sales tax.

Earlier this year, sales tax audits of yoga studios were initiated and some feared they could face years of unpaid back taxes.

But with last week's ruling by the New York Department of Taxation and Finance, sessions at facilities dedicated solely to instruction of yoga concepts and poses are not taxable.

If, however, yoga is taught inside a New York City gym or fitness studio, that business will have to pay sales tax on the classes.

The official statement describes health and fitness clubs as those facilities that generally provide customers or members with access to exercise equipment. This includes Pilates, aerobics and fitness studios, weight reducing salons, spas, gyms, saunas, Turkish baths, tanning salons and similar businesses.

The reason for the distinction? Tax officials say that yoga's focus on spirituality sets studios where it alone is taught apart from typical exercise facilities.

"We looked into the history and origins of yoga and found that it was more meditative and spiritual rather than fitness," Empire State tax office spokesman Geoffrey Gloak told DNAinfo.com.

That finding definitely gives yoga instructors and their students some peace of mind as well as few extra dollars.

Samir Nasri banned for 3 matches by French FA

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:20 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

PARIS (AP) -The French Football Federation banned midfielder Samir Nasri on Friday for three matches because of his undisciplined behavior at the European Championship.

Nasri issued an expletive-laced rant at a journalist following France's 2-0 defeat to Spain in the quarterfinals. He previously made a sarcastic gesture with his finger over his mouth and yelled "Shut your mouth!" at another journalist after scoring in the opening Group D match against England.

The ban rules Nasri out of a friendly against Uruguay next month, and 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus.

Three other players appeared before the FFF's disciplinary hearing on Friday because of their misbehavior at Euro 2012.

Winger Jeremy Menez was given a one-match ban, while winger Hatem Ben Arfa and central midfielder Yann M'Vila escaped with reprimands.

Menez swore at captain Hugo Lloris during the same match and M'Vila left the pitch without shaking the hand of France coach Laurent Blanc or that of Olivier Giroud, his replacement.

Ben Arfa was involved in a heated changing-room bust-up with Blanc following the 2-0 defeat to Sweden in the final group match, reportedly angering the coach by speaking on his mobile phone while Blanc was addressing the players following the defeat. Blanc turned down a new contract offer after Euro 2012 and Didier Deschamps is now in charge.

Jean Mazella, who heads the disciplinary committee, told RMC radio that the players "did not apologize" but that they "regretted what they said and how they behaved."

Menez was represented at the hearing by his lawyer.

"He regrets what happened. It was an error of youth," lawyer Carlo Alberto Brusa said.

The incidents undermined Blanc's attempts to rebuild the national team's image following the 2010 World Cup under former coach Raymond Domenech. Striker Nicolas Anelka received an 18-match ban after insulting coach Raymond Domenech in the dressing room during the tournament in South Africa.

Several players - including captain Patrice Evra - received shorter bans for their part in a training-ground strike in protest over Anelka being sent home.

Facebook shares sink to new low after 2Q results

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock hit a new low Friday after it reported lukewarm second-quarter results and didn't give an outlook for the coming months.

The stock fell $3.83, or more than 14 percent, to $23.02 in morning trading Friday. Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering of stock priced at $38, and its low had been $25.52, hit on June 6. The stock is now about 39 percent below its IPO price.

Facebook issued its first financial report as a public company after the market closed Thursday. The company reported slightly stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers, but investors weren't impressed.

Although revenue grew 32 percent in the second quarter, growth has slowed from earlier this year and from previous years. That's a concern for a newly public company. Investors are willing to value new companies highly, even if they are not making a profit, because they expect booming revenue.

Baird's Colin Sebastian also pointed out that the company is spending more on technology and hiring, driving up expenses.

But he's not overly concerned. He backed his "Outperform" rating for Facebook, saying advertising revenue was better than expected and the company is improving its ability to make money from users who access Facebook from apps on their phones and tablet computers.

Other analysts remained positive, too. Of 27 analysts available from FactSet, 15 have "Buy" ratings or equivalent, while just three are a "Sell." Analysts tend to have longer-term views of stocks than many day-to-day investors.

Mobile and users in developing countries are driving growth in active monthly users, Sebastian said. Facebook had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year ago.

"We don't view these results as dramatically good or bad," said Citi analyst Mark Mahaney. "Key questions remain: the future of Facebook mobile monetization and the future of Facebook user engagement."

Analysts also cautioned that the stock could be volatile because Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Overall the company reported a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, in the April-June period, mainly because of compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago.

The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

Facebook's revenue of $1.18 billion was slightly higher than the $1.16 billion expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

The results came two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ? even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

Gain Control Of Your Life With The Help Of Psychic Experts

People have always been fascinated with the question of whether there was any solid way for people to get hints of things to come in their future. For most people, checking their horoscopes for the day is the closest they can come to speculating on ways to approach people, make decisions, and run into a little welcome luck. Horoscopes usually hint on general events that may be encountered somewhat soon: a conflict with a loved one, a particularly stressful day at work, a moment of clarity later in the day, or a surprising conversation with a close friend to be kept in confidence. While any of these examples commonly occur on almost a daily basis, some people still marvel at the possibility that something truly occurred all because the day's horoscope specifically said it would.

Consulting a psychic may not be something that everyone would be willing to try, but there are individuals who prefer a straightforward conversation with a person with supposed extra-sensory perceptions and extraordinary abilities of seeing into the future and predicting significant events. Someone like an extraordinary woman by the (original) name of Brown Sylvia; Sylvia Brown is a world renowned psychic, spiritual teacher, author, and researcher who has reportedly helped people gain substantial control of their lives, find true happiness, and understand the meaning of life.

Making a life change is something that crosses the mind of individuals at different stages in their life for different reasons. A career path a person had originally laid out may be proving to be too taxing on one's health or finances and might be better off scrapped altogether in favor of a more rewarding vocation; a relationship that is proving to be destructive may need to be ended right away before more people are emotionally and physically hurt; a person's introverted nature may be causing him or her to miss out on life experiences and must be addressed in order to improve one's future relationships and connections with society--all of these are examples of life changes that people decide on starting every day, and while not every transition can be successful or painless for everyone who tries it, the decision to make the change in itself serves as an empowering and truly positive experience for all involved.

For still some others, taking a cue from the patterns and cycles that can be found everywhere in the universe can be their way of finding a path to an improved life. Consulting a numerologist for guidance in learning how one's personal numbers can determine how the energies of the universe will effect one's day and can help adjust to life's curveballs and declarations. Numbers can give an idea of days when one must practice spontaneity, sit down and weigh the pros and cons of a situation, meditate on goals, or be practical in making decisions. Keeping in sync with the energies all around can help produce less conflict and more clarity to one's outlook and decisions.

Taking hold of the steering wheel of one's life may not be as easy or as straightforward as one would like, but with different ways to guide oneself to harmony and positive energy, anyone can take steps to achieving a successful life change today.

Contact a numerologist and get a straight forward answers to all your questions regarding your way of life.

Couple Says Insurance Agent Stole Their Money | KFOR.com ...

TUTTLE, Okla. ? An Oklahoma couple is convinced they were duped by their insurance agent. They say they paid cash, but the agent pocketed the money.

Rose Marsh, 62, likes a bargain.

So, last year when she and her husband decided their homeowner?s insurance was too expensive, they switched to what they thought was a better deal.

When Rose paid the premium, she paid with cash.

?I didn?t have the checkbook with me and I paid cash,? she said.

However, that cash was never applied to her new policy.

She found out when she later tried to make a claim after a storm pounded the roof of her home.

She says her new agent avoided her.

So she contacted the the insurance company herself.

?And that?s when I found out it was cancelled due to no payment,? she said.

Rose immediately contacted the insurance commissioner?s office.

State investigators were quick to respond say Rose did one very important thing.

She kept all documentation.

The missing in action insurance agent may have avoided Rose, but the state sure got everyone?s attention.

?By state law the insurance companies have a certain amount of time to respond back to us,? Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak said.

Rose?s insurance company issued her a check for the $13,000 in damages, and she finally got her roof repaired.

As for all the hassle she went through just for trying to save a little money, well, you and live and learn.

?I?m not mad,? she said. ?I just look at what could have happened.?

NewsChannel 4 is withholding the name of the insurance company and the agent, because state officials tell us this case is still under investigation.

Intense Competition among Scientists Has Gotten out of Hand

Image: Carl Wiens

When Isaac Newton developed calculus and his theory of gravity, he reaped a reward far greater than stock options in a start-up or a big year-end bonus. He got credit for his work and recognition among his peers?and eventually the wider world. Since Newton, science has changed a great deal, but this basic fact has not. Credit for work done is still the currency of science.

How should credit for scientific work be assigned? The question has tremendous implications for how science is done and what society gets from its investment. Since the earliest days of science, bragging rights to a discovery have gone to the person who first reports it. This ?priority rule? has led to some colorful disputes?Newton famously got into a tussle with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who wanted credit for inventing calculus?but by and large, the rule has worked well. In recent years, however, intense competition among scientists has led to difficulties, and we have begun to wonder if there isn't a better way.

At its best, the priority rule fosters healthy competition, which can be a strong motivator for scientists to innovate and rapidly solve problems. Economists view scientific knowledge as a public good, which means that competitors are free to make use of that knowledge once it is publicized. The priority rule provides a potent incentive for scientists to share their knowledge. Some think that the priority rule also helps to ensure that society gets the optimal return from its investment in science because rewards go to those scientists who benefit society the most.

The winner-take-all aspect of the priority rule has its drawbacks, however. It can encourage secrecy, sloppy practices, dishonesty and an excessive emphasis on surrogate measures of scientific quality, such as publication in high-impact journals. The editors of the journal Nature have recently exhorted scientists to take greater care in their work, citing poor reproducibility of published findings, errors in figures, improper controls, incomplete descriptions of methods and unsuitable statistical analyses as evidence of increasing sloppiness. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

As competition over reduced funding has increased markedly, these disadvantages of the priority rule may have begun to outweigh its benefits. Success rates for scientists applying for National Institutes of Health funding have recently reached an all-time low. As a result, we have seen a steep rise in unhealthy competition among scientists, accompanied by a dramatic proliferation in the number of scientific publications retracted because of fraud or error. Recent scandals in science are reminiscent of the doping problems in sports, in which disproportionately rich rewards going to winners has fostered cheating.

The importance of teamwork in science has never been greater. Studies of publications over the past 50 years show that teams increasingly dominate science and are contributing the highest-impact research. Collaborators, consortia and networks are essential for tackling interdisciplinary problems and massive undertakings, such as the Human Genome Project. The priority rule may be undermining this process.

The appropriateness of the priority rule for science has never been seriously questioned. Is it best suited to the modern scientific age, in which scientists operate in large teams that put a premium on cooperation? An alternative system that celebrates team effort toward solving problems may work better. Industry, which favors collective goals over individual achievement, and the NIH Intramural Research Program, which encourages risk taking and collaborative partnerships with industry and academia, provide contrasting but instructional examples. Perhaps scientists would gladly trade the benefits of the priority rule (individual reward) for a system that offers greater stability of support and collegiality, freer sharing of information, more fairness, and improved scientific rigor and cooperation. This would be a discovery of enormous benefit to the scientific enterprise and the society it serves.

entreVIEW: Pre-Transaction Estate Planning Part 2: Grantor ...

Building on the first installment of this series (the simple gift of business units), this second post will discuss the first leveraged gifting option?grantor retained annuity trusts, more commonly known as GRATs. Estate planners love acronyms, so almost every specialized technique will have some kind of acronym associated with it.

A GRAT is an irrevocable trust that is established by the grantor, and the grantor pays all the income taxes associated with the assets held in the trust. The trust is established to last a certain period of years, usually 2-5 years. Right now there are no limitations on the term length, but that is something Congress is considering changing.

The grantor transfers assets to the trust, and then retains the right to get ALL the assets back in annual installments in the form of an annuity. In addition to getting all the assets back, the grantor receives a prescribed interest rate. Any growth the assets have over the initial value plus that interest rate, the trust retains tax free. Generally the lower the rate, the more successful the trust is. After the prescribed term of years, the trust usually continues for the lives of children. Just as in the example in Part 1, if you anticipate your business will grow in value, have a sale event, go public, or experience some other appreciation event, you can capture all of that appreciation tax free.

Example. Business owner transfers $10,000,000 of appraised business assets to a GRAT for a three-year term. The business owner will receive three annual payments of $3,400,200 based on August?s rate of 1.0% (an all-time low), and if the assets grow at 10%, the trust will contain over $2,000,000 after the three years. All tax free. If the assets grow 30%, say in a sale, the remainder left in the trust will grow to $8,400,000 tax free.

If the assets go down in value there is no risk to you as grantor; the assets are treated the same as if you held the assets in your own name. There are no income tax implications to transferring the stock to the trust and there are little to no gift tax implications. This is a great technique if you are expecting an appreciation event, or even have steadily appreciating business assets. The lower the interest rate, the better the technique works, so now is the time to take advantage.

TIPS TO AVOID OVER EATING | Cameron Memorial Community ...

Controlling your weight calls for more than just choosing a healthy variety of foods. It also calls for looking at how much and how often you eat.

In addition to selecting a healthy variety of foods, look at the size of the portions you eat. The following tips may help you reach and stay at a healthy weight

Take the amount of food that is equal to one serving, according to the Nutrition Facts, and eat it off a plate instead of eating straight out of a large box or bag.

Avoid eating in front of the TV or while busy with other activities. Pay attention to what you are eating, chew your food well, and fully enjoy the smell and taste of your foods.

Eat slowly so your brain can get the message that your stomach is full.
Try using smaller dishes, bowls, and glasses. This way, when you fill up your plate or glass, you will be eating and drinking less.

To control your intake of the higher-fat, higher-calorie parts of a meal, take seconds of vegetables and salads (watch the toppings) instead of desserts and dishes with heavy sauces.

When cooking in large batches, freeze food that you will not serve right away. This way, you will not be tempted to finish eating the whole batch before the food goes bad. And you will have ready-made food for another day. Freeze leftovers in amounts that you can use for a single serving or for a family meal another day.

Try to eat meals at regular intervals. Skipping meals or leaving large gaps of time between meals may lead you to eat larger amounts of food the next time that you eat.
When buying snacks, go for single-serving prepackaged items and foods that are lower-calorie options. If you buy larger bags or boxes of snacks, divide the items into single-serve packages.

Make snacks count. Eating many high-calorie snacks throughout the day may lead to weight gain. Replace snacks like chips and soda with snacks such as low-fat or fat-free yogurt, smoothies, fruit, or whole-grain crackers.

When you do have a treat like chips or ice cream, measure out 1/2 cup of ice cream or 1 ounce of chips, as indicated by the Nutrition Facts, eat it slowly, and enjoy it!
When Eating Out

Share your meal, order a half-portion, or order an appetizer as a main meal. Examples of healthier appetizers include tuna or chicken salad, minestrone soup, and tomato or corn salsas.

Take at least half of your meal home. Ask for a portion of your meal to be boxed up when it is served so you will not be tempted to eat more than you need.

Stop eating when you begin to feel full. Focus on enjoying the setting and your friends or family for the rest of the meal.

Avoid large beverages such as ?supersize? sugar-sweetened soft drinks. They have a large number of calories. Instead, try drinking water with a slice of lemon. If you want to drink soda, choose a calorie-free beverage or a small sugar-sweetened soft drink.

When traveling, pack a small cooler of foods that are hard to find on the road, such as fresh fruit, sliced raw vegetables, and fat-free or low-fat yogurt. Also, pack a few bottles of water instead of sugar-sweetened soda or juice. You can also bring dried fruit, nuts, and seeds to snack on. Since these foods can be high in calories, measure and pack small portions (1/4 cup) in advance. If you stop at a restaurant, try to choose one that serves a variety of foods such as salads, grilled or steamed entrees, or a plain baked potato. Consider drinking water or low-fat or fat-free milk instead of sugar-sweetened soft drinks with your meal. If you choose a higher-fat option like french fries or pizza, order the small size, or ask for a single slice of pizza with vegetable toppings such as mushrooms, peppers, or olives.
