Cardinal Timothy Dolan: Catholic Church's Nature Means It Will be Out of Touch Sometimes

During an interview for "This Week," Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that the Catholic Church's very nature means it will be - from time to time - out of touch with the concerns of its followers.

"Sometimes by nature, the Church has got to be out of touch with concerns, because we're always supposed to be thinking of the beyond, the eternal, the changeless," Dolan said. "Our major challenge is to continue in a credible way to present the eternal concerns to people in a timeless attractive way. And sometimes there is a disconnect - between what they're going through and what Jesus and his Church is teaching. And that's a challenge for us."

Dolan was responding to a question from Stephanopoulos about a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, which found that 60 percent of Catholics "describe the church as 'out of touch' with the views of Catholics in America."

As much of the country celebrates the Christian holiday of Easter, Stephanopoulos asked Dolan about the rise of people with no religious affiliation and if the church can bring people back toward God.

"What I'm afraid is that that's afflicting society in general. That's afflicting families. That's afflicting - communities. People want privacy. People crave isolation. We're hearing parents say that they can't even get their kids to talk anymore," he said. "They're - they're tweeting one another. So, this - kinda this craving of individualism, being alone, be - aloofness, that's afflicting all of culture, all of society. We're feeling it in the Church, too, because we're not about 'me.' We're about 'us.' We're about the 'our.' We say 'Our Father.' But society is saying, 'It's me, myself and I.'"

Stephanopoulos also asked Dolan what the Catholic Church can say to gays and lesbians, who feel unwelcomed by the Church, which does not support same-sex marriage.

"Well, the first thing I'd say to them is, 'I love you, too. And God loves you. And you are made in God's image and likeness. And - and we - we want your happiness. But - and you're entitled to friendship.' But we also know that God has told us that the way to happiness, that - especially when it comes to sexual love - that is intended only for a man and woman in marriage, where children can come about naturally," Dolan said. "We got to be - we got to do better to see that our defense of marriage is not reduced to an attack on gay people. And I admit, we haven't been too good at that. We try our darndest to make sure we're not an anti-anybody."

Dolan also addressed the new reality of having both a newly elected pope and also a former pope living at the same time. Stephanopoulos asked him about a recent photo of the two men together and if it was unsettling to see two Popes side-by-side.

"I think it was unsettling to a lot of us, because we're just not used to having two - two popes, even though one of them is retired. But I don't think it was unsettling to him. They almost tried to out-class each other in showing deference to one another. And that's not bad," Dolan said.

Finally, Dolan praised Nelson Mandela - who was hospitalized this week with a lung infection - and said he was praying for him.

"I'm praying with and for him. I had the honor of meeting him once. And what the word that comes to mind when you speak of a giant like Nelson Mandela is reconciliation. And that's a good thing to remember about Easter," Dolan said.

"We say that Jesus came to reconcile the world. He wanted to embrace the world and bring them to his Father. And the world took those hands and put them on a cross, because they don't like being reconciled. Nelson Mandela was one of those who could take his hands and embrace a nation. The world is in his debt, because he taught us the power of reconciliation and forgiveness," he said.

EU, IMF resisting merger of Greek banks NBG, Eurobank: paper

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's international lenders have asked Athens to halt the merger of National Bank with Eurobank , worried that the resulting lender would be too big for the state to deal with, daily Kathimerini reported on Saturday.

The paper said the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund troika had raised issues over the size of the merged entity relative to Greece's gross domestic product (GDP) and the banking sector as a whole.

Two banking sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Reuters that doubts had been raised.

"Pretty much these are the arguments put forth by the troika," one of the bankers told Reuters.

The banks and the Greek government had no comment to make on the report. European Commission officials were not immediately available.

National Bank (NBG) took over 84.3 percent of Eurobank last month via a share swap as part of consolidation in Greece's banking industry to cope with fallout from the debt crisis and a deep recession.

The two banks have already initiated merger procedures.

"NBG is going ahead with the legal merger process to absorb Eurobank, which has been approved by Greek and European authorities. Our goal is to complete the process by June," an NBG official told Reuters, declining to comment on the report.

The combined group would have assets of 170 billion euros, almost the size of the country's 190 billion GDP and 36 percent of total deposits.

"The troika is arguing that the two banks must be recapitalized separately and remain separate legal entities," Kathimerini said.

"The request of the troika that the merger be cancelled is a red line for the government as the tie up is now on its final stretch," the paper said.

The two banks together need 15.6 billion euros in fresh capital to shore up their solvency ratios to levels required by the central bank after incurring losses from a sovereign debt writedown and impaired loans.

According to the paper, troika officials argue that the combined entity would find it hard to raise a minimum 10 percent of the needed capital from the private sector to stay privately run, as required under the agreed recapitalization scheme.

Such an outcome would bring the group under the full control of a state bank support fund, which would have a harder time finding a buyer for a bank of this size in the future.

Crosby hit in mouth by puck, will not return

(AP) ? Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby lost several teeth and needed oral surgery after he was hit in the mouth with a puck during a 2-0 victory against the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Coach Dan Bylsma wasn't sure if the injury affected Crosby's jaw and didn't know if he would miss any more time. The Penguins, who have won a league-high 15 straight games, host Buffalo on Tuesday.

"I just know he had some issues with his teeth," Bylsma said. "Just from the replay I know that."

Bylsma saw enough to become concerned about the health of the team's biggest star, particularly because of his well-documented history battling concussion problems.

Crosby missed considerable time the past two years because of concussions. He was sidelined for the final 41 games in 2011 and the Stanley Cup playoffs, in addition to skipping most of the 2012 regular season as symptoms lingered.

"I think every time that type of thing happens to a player you think about it," Bylsma said.

Crosby has enjoyed a resurgence this season, leading the league with 41 assists and 56 points. He holds a 10-point lead over Steven Stamkos in the NHL scoring race.

Saturday's injury could hinder Crosby's march to the scoring title.

A bloodied Crosby, who did not return to the game, skated off the ice with a towel covering his mouth after Brooks Orpik's slap shot from the point deflected off a stick and hit the Canadian center just 1:28 into the game.

"When you see the replay, he had no chance to move," said newly acquired star forward Jarome Iginla, who made his Penguins debut after a blockbuster trade early Thursday morning with the Calgary Flames.

"He didn't see it hit him. It's a very, very unfortunate play."

Crosby immediately fell to the ice and tossed his stick in the air. He then went to the hospital for surgery.

"It's very tough to see that happen to anybody on the ice, but this is your teammate, and Sid's such a great player and a big part of this team," Iginla said.

"He's a tough guy and a competitor. Guys were definitely checking to see how he was doing."

Pittsburgh still managed to go on to its 15th straight win, moving within two of the NHL record set by Mario Lemieux and the 1992-93 Penguins.

Make Better Eye Contact and Remember People's Names with One Simple Trick

Make Better Eye Contact and Remember People's Names with One Simple TrickIf you find yourself stumbling over conversations with other people, reader whyalways shares a tip for making better eye contact and remembering people's names all at once.

Remembering names and making eye contact are important. I had trouble with both. After reading this series at the Art of Manliness, I realized I needed to get better at them. What I've started to do is: as soon as I meet someone new I pair their name with their eye color. How do I find out their eye color? By making good eye contact. To learn someone's eye color you have to look them in the eye. Its a specific thing to do instead of something more general like "make good eye contact."

How does this help me remember their name? Because their eye color/eyes act as a tethering image in my memory so that their name is attached to something very specific instead of just floating around to get lost/misplaced. Simple and immediate, but has helped me enough that I felt I should share it.

It may not be foolproof for everyone, but it's just one more thing to add to your bag of tricks for remembering people's names and making good eye contact.

Every week, we receive tons of reader tips, often in response to tips we've posted. Our Tip of the Week showcases our favorite tip from you that improves upon something else we've shared, shows us another way to do something, or otherwise deserves more attention than our regular tips roundups. Got a tip to share? Post it over at our tips forum or send it to us at tips@lifehacker.com.

Facebook data shows picture of same-sex marriage support

Noticed a lot of profile pictures changing this week on Facebook? It was a nationwide trend, as users on the social network responded to the Human Rights Campaign's request for them to substitute a red-and-pink equal sign for their profile photos in support of same-sex marriage, with the nation's highest court hearing two cases on the issue.

Facebook knows, of course, whenever someone changes their profile picture, and there's a normal daily rhythm for American users. But Facebook's investigation showed a huge bump in picture changes just after the Human Rights Campaign began its effort.

"While millions of U.S. Facebook users update their profile photos on a given day, we found that significantly more users ? roughly 2.7 million (120 percent) more, updated their profile photo on Tuesday, March 26 compared to the previous Tuesday," notes Eytan Bakshy, a researcher on the Facebook Data Science Team, in the post.

Profile pic changes skyrocketed among younger users, especially those around the age of 30; teenagers and seniors didn't get quite as much into the spirit.

There were also some highly significant geographical trends, as illustrated by the map above. The darker the color of the country, the more people changed their profile picture. The most active county in the country was Washtenaw, in Michigan, home to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan ? and the other most active counties also contained major colleges and universities.

As some commenting on the Facebook blog post have pointed out, there's no way to know whether all these profile picture updates were in support of gay marriage, since users could just as easily be changing their picture to indicate opposition to gay marriage (or just a new look). But the correlation with college towns and the deliberate and visible campaign by the Human Rights Campaign suggest that it was mostly supportive.

The rest of the data and a few more observations by the Facebook Data Science Team can be found at the blog post itself.

Little kids talk the truth about relationships. Another unique marriage ...

We start Good News Friday with one of the cutest videos I?ve ever seen. Ostensibly this is a promotional video for a new book called ?Get The Guy,? but really it?s just two minutes of little girls talking like grown-ups about relationships.
I?m not buying the book, but this commercial is genius.

Davidson v Marquette

**Well that sucked.
Can?t remember an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 night with three out of four crappy games; only one game was remotely competitive, and that was Ohio State squeaking out a three-point win over Arizona.
Indiana and Miami both completely failed to show up; I was so looking forward to them facing each other on Saturday, except both forgot to play this game first. Kudos to Marquette and Syracuse, both teams played great, but man, what stinkers of games.
Oh well, the good news is (and hey, it?s Good News Friday, so you knew there had to be some good news) is that tonight?s games should be crackling.
Most important to me is the could-be-epic Duke-Michigan State game. I?m feeling pessimistic about my boys? chances, because the Spartans are so good inside and on the boards, two of Duke?s weaknesses. If Mason Plumlee doesn?t get into foul trouble, and if Ryan Kelly remembers how to shoot, Duke can win.
But I?m not all that confident.

We?ve also got a possibly great Kansas-Michigan game tonight, and we?ve got the best story in sports, the Florida Gulf Coast juggernaut (ha!), playing the big bad boys of their state, the Florida Gators. Man I hope FGCU can keep it going, that would be so great to watch.

So I expect three out of four really good, close games tonight. After Thursday?s debacle, we hoopheads deserve it.

**And finally, you know I?m a huge fan of creative marriage proposals. The ones on the scoreboard at sports events are pretty lame, but this guy found a different way to propose at a basketball game.

Check out her reaction when she turns around, it?s beautiful.

Although most attention these days is lavished upon sleek tablets, ultrabooks, and all-in-one systems, tower desktops have persisted, often while bearing much less expensive price tags than the headline-grabbing devices. A good example is the Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR11 ($599.99 list), a Windows 8-equipped mainstream desktop that totes a reasonable price tag and offers decent performance without entirely skimping on perks like USB 3.0 ports and a roomy 1TB hard drive. While it's not the most impressive system we've ever seen, there's still value to be found here.

Design and Features
The Aspire AT3-600-UR11 is housed in a midrange tower that measures 14.9 by 7.1 by 15.8 inches (HWD), making it nearly identical in size to the HP Pavilion P7-1235 and the Editors' Choice-winning Gateway DX4870-UR11P. At any rate, while its chassis isn't exactly the flashiest, its subdued aesthetic isn't entirely devoid of personality, either. Its black metallic body is complemented by dashes of white LED lights on its upper lip and Acer logo, as well as a glossy plastic face and a rubbery gray storage deck for peripherals on the top. The system's front ports are also housed on this gray upper lip, which protrudes above the tower, where you'll find a pair of USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, headphone and mic jacks, and a multicard reader. Beneath that, the system's front panel houses a DVD burner and a vacant optical drive bay. The rear of the chassis sports four USB 2.0 ports, an additional pair of USB 3.0 ports, two PS/2 ports (for older mice and keyboards, even though the bundled peripherals are USB 2.0), HDMI- and VGA- out, audio ports, and Ethernet.

After unscrewing two bolts to pop open the side of the Aspire AT3-600-UR11's chassis, you'll be greeted with moderate potential for internal expansion. In addition to an empty optical drive bay, there's also a pair of vacant 3.5-inch bays for two additional hard drives. The system's 6GB DDR3 RAM is made up of one 4GB module and a 2GB module, leaving two empty sockets for RAM upgrades. One of the motherboard's three PCIe x1 slots is occupied by the built-in 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi card, leaving the other two PCIe x1 slots available.

The Aspire AT3-600-UR11's 1TB, 7,200rpm HDD offers users plenty of room to store programs and media files. Still, those with a preference for starting from a clean slate will initially need to shovel through a moderate amount of preloaded software. As is often the case, these programs range in utility from useful (DVD-burning software like CyberLink Media Espresso and Nero 12 Essentials) to trialware (thirty days of Microsoft Office 365, McAfee Internet Security, and McAfee Online Backup, respectively) to bloatware (desktop links to Netflix, Skype, Amazon, and Hulu Plus; WildTangent Games). Acer also throws in some proprietary software, like access to the Acer Cloud network, Acer Power Management, and Acer Recovery Manager. The Aspire AT3-600-UR11 is covered by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
Aspire AT3-600-UR11

With its 3.0GHz Intel Core i5-3330 processor and 6GB RAM, the Aspire AT3-600-UR11 performed admirably in our benchmark tests. While its PCMark 7 score of 3,185 points fell slightly short of the class-leading Gateway DX4870-UR11P (3,450 points) and the HP Pavilion P7-1520t (3,445 points), it had little difficulty surpassing the rest of the pack, including the Acer Aspire AM3970G-UW10P (2,611 points) and the Lenovo H520s (2,864 points). Its Cinebench R11.5 score of 3.99 points, meanwhile, falls between the HP P7-1235 (2.76 points) and both the HP P7-1520t and Acer AM3970G-UW10P (4.91 points each, respectively).

The Aspire AT3-600-UR11 displayed a modest capacity for multimedia creation. It ran through our Handbrake video-encoding test in 45 seconds, falling seconds shy of the Pavilion P7-1520t (42 seconds). Similarly, the 3 minutes 57 seconds it took to run through our Photoshop CS6 test nipped at the HP P7-1520t's heels (3:55).

Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR11

While the Aspire AT3-600-UR11 failed to crack the 30 frames-per-second (fps) playability barrier on our high-end gaming tests, its discrete 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 630 GPU gave its 3D rendering capabilities a boost. Its scores in 3DMark11 (2,132 points in Entry-level settings; 397 points in Extreme-level settings) were nearly identical with those of the HP P7-1520t (2,164 points and 397 points, respectively)?a sensible outcome given that both systems pack the same GPU?and breezed past the Gateway DX4870-UR11P (1,460 points in Entry-level settings).

While the Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR11 isn't the flashiest system available, it's nevertheless a good value thanks to its reasonable price tag, USB 3.0 support, and spacious 1TB hard drive. However, users looking for greater processing power should first check out the Gateway DX4870-UR11P, whose robust Core i7 processor, extra RAM, and larger hard drive justify its costlier price tag. That said, there's still plenty to like about the Aspire AT3-600-UR11, and it's certainly worthy of consideration.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Standard & Poor's 500 crossed into record territory Thursday, beating a previous all-time high set in pre-financial crisis days.

The S&P 500, a stock index that investors use to gauge how the market is performing, edged above the record of 1,565 it set on Oct. 9, 2007. Around 11 a.m. EDT, it was trading at 1,567, up four points on the day.

The record comes against a backdrop of big stock market gains but continued uncertainty about the economy. Earlier this month, the Dow Jones industrial average, another popular barometer of the stock market, beat its own 2007 record and has continued to rise.

Even as the indexes touch new milestones, investors wonder how long the gains can last given Europe's lingering debt problems and the plodding growth of the U.S. economy. They're also concerned that the gains are being artificially fueled by the Federal Reserve's easy money policy.

Like the Dow record before it, the S&P record reminded investors of a headier time. October 2007 was pre-financial crisis, pre-bailouts, pre-Great Recession. Bear Stearns still existed. So did Lehman Brothers, Wachovia and Washington Mutual. The jobless rate was 4.7 percent, well within the bounds of what most economists consider full employment.

But by March 2009, long after the subprime mortgage market had been revealed as an unsustainable bubble and rumors were buzzing that the government might nationalize U.S. banks, the S&P had cratered from its lofty heights. It fell to its Great Recession low, 676.53, on March 9, 2009 ? down 57 percent from its October 2007 pinnacle. It has more than doubled since reaching that bottom.

Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said that the S&P 500's return to its old record marked "an important step" for investors. But he cautioned that there are no guarantees for future performance.

"Markets are volatile," he wrote in a note to clients Thursday morning, "and if you are a long-term investor you should expect declines."

On Thursday, news about the U.S. economy and the European debt crisis was far from decisive. For every sign that things were improving, another said it wasn't.

The U.S. economy grew faster than first estimated in the fourth quarter, the government reported. But the growth, an annual rate of 0.4 percent, was still anemic. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits jumped for the second straight week. On a longer time frame, though, jobless claims have been declining since November.

Investors are also uncertain what to make of the continuing debt crisis in Europe, including the bailout of the Mediterranean island country of Cyprus. Banks there reopened Thursday for the first time in nearly two weeks.

The banks had been closed because the government was negotiating emergency loans from other European countries, and there were concerns that there would be a run on the banks. Across Cyprus on Thursday, customers stood in long but orderly lines for hours ahead of the bank openings, and guards from private security firms reinforced police outside some ATMs and banks in the capital, Nicosia.

Some investors had predicted that a bailout plan for Cyprus would send the markets up because it would calm concerns that the country's banking system might collapse. But the markets have been mixed this week. Some investors said the Cyprus bailout served as a reminder that Europe's debt crisis lingers.

Like other major market indicators, the S&P darted between small gains and losses when trading first opened. In late morning trading the Dow Jones industrial average rose 45 points, or 0.3 percent, to 14,571. The Nasdaq composite rose four points, 0.1 percent, to 3,260.

Among stocks making big moves:

?Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry phones, rose after surprising analysts with a profitable quarter and better-than-expected sales of its touch-screen BlackBerry 10s. The company hopes to take back some of the market share it has lost to Apple's iPhone and other competitors. The stock rose 59 cents, about 4 percent, to $15.16.

?Repros Therapeutics, a drug developer, shot higher on news that its potential treatment for low testosterone moved closer to regulatory approval. The stock rose $6.27, or 69 percent, to $15.40.

?Signet Jewelers, which runs Kay and Jared stores, and Mosaic, the fertilizer maker, were both up after reporting higher quarterly profits and revenue. Signet rose more than 7 percent, $4.74, to $68.01. Mosaic was up more than 1 percent, rising 83 cents to $59.51.

EA reveals Battlefield 4 headed to PC this fall, refuses to confirm next-gen (video)

Battlefield 4 arrives this fall, heading to PC and probably nextgen

This year's Battlefield series entry -- Battlefield 4 -- is headed to PCs this fall. The game wasn't given other platforms, but logic dictates it'll arrive on the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor. Apparently, since only Sony's next-gen console is a known quantity and Microsoft's staying mum, EA isn't sharing other platforms yet (but hey, it's probably PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox). The game's being built on the latest iteration of DICE's Frostbite engine, though no other details were given about the engine just yet.

Like previous Battlefield entries, EA-owned Swedish game studio DICE is at the helm, and Battlefield 4 remains planted in current times (unlike the pseudo-future of Call of Duty's latest entry, Black Ops 2). A beta for the game will go live some time this fall, and folks who bought last year's Medal of Honor: Warfighter are automatically part of said beta. We'll have more info as EA offers it up, but color us not surprised if Battlefield 4 makes a reprise appearance at Microsoft's still undated Xbox 360 successor unveiling.

Update: EA also released a 17-minute gameplay demo of the game's prologue section, played on a PC. It features a squad of four soldiers on the run from Russian spec-ops militants in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. You'll find it just beyond the break.

Update 2: Per a listing on EA's digital store, Battlefield 4 is headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in addition to the PC. PlayStation 4 is curiously missing, as is mention of Microsoft's next-gen game console.

Myanmar general lauds army's democratic role as troops patrol

By Aung Hla Tun

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar's military will retain its key role in the country's fledgling democracy, the armed forces chief said on Wednesday at an annual parade attended for the first time by democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing spoke as his soldiers enforced an uneasy peace in central Myanmar, where martial law was declared in four townships last week to quell anti-Muslim riots that officially killed 40 people.

The unrest between Buddhists and Muslims is spreading, posing the biggest challenge yet to a reformist government that took office in 2011 after nearly half a century of military rule.

Min Aung Hlaing said the military would continue to play a "leading political role" in accordance with Myanmar's constitution, which was drafted by the former junta and reserves a quarter of parliamentary seats for military officers.

Early on Wednesday a mob in Nattalin, about 130 miles northwest of the commercial capital, Yangon, tried to destroy three houses and a mosque but were stopped by soldiers, a local government official told Reuters.

"So far as I know, nobody was injured and nothing burnt down," he said. Dusk-to-dawn curfews are now in place in Nattalin and five nearby townships.

President Thein Sein has won praise for freeing jailed dissidents, relaxing media censorship and trying to fix Myanmar's dysfunctional economy.

But his government has also been criticized for failing to stem last year's violence in Rakhine State in western Myanmar, where officials say 110 people were killed and 120,000 were left homeless, most of them Rohingya Muslims.

In his speech at the Armed Forces Day parade in the capital, Naypyitaw, Min Aung Hlaing expressed the military's loyalty to Thein Sein, himself a former general, before watching a procession of troops and military hardware, including truck-borne missiles.

The military was helping to build "an eternally peaceful and developing nation", he said.

Human rights groups have long accused Myanmar's military of war crimes and crimes against humanity in its campaigns against armed rebels from ethnic groups such as the Kachin and Shan.

"All our members are being trained in the provisions of the Geneva Convention so our Tatmadaw do not commit any war crimes," said Min Aung Hlaing, referring to the military by a Burmese word meaning "Royal Force". "There is no such thing as genocide in the history of our Tatmadaw."

HOUSE ARREST

Among the guests was Suu Kyi, who spent a total of 15 years in prison or under house arrest under the former junta. She is the daughter of independence hero General Aung San, who founded the modern Myanmar army.

Suu Kyi upset some supporters in January by expressing her "fondness" for the military, which still refuses to acknowledge its well-documented human rights abuses.

In a statement on Wednesday, her National League for Democracy party called on the armed forces "to take part in working for the rule of law, the emergence of peace and amending the constitution".

Anti-Muslim unrest promises to further expand the military's role, however. Myanmar is a predominantly Buddhist country, but about 5 percent of its 60 million people are Muslims. There are large communities in Yangon, Mandalay and towns across Myanmar's heartland, which is dominated by the majority Burmans, who are Buddhists.

Yangon remains tense, with the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday advising its citizens to avoid the downtown Mingalar Market area after a fight there led to a heavy police presence.

Myanmar's government "would not hesitate to push the army in" to prevent further unrest, Vijay Nambiar, U.N. Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Myanmar, has told Reuters.

Communal tension, stifled under military rule, exploded to the surface last June, after 10 Muslims were beaten to death by a Buddhist mob in Taungop town in Rakhine State.

Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday the Muslims displaced in Rakhine State had effectively been segregated, living in squalid camps that security forces stopped them leaving. The government was restricting aid, it added, warning of a humanitarian crisis when the rainy season comes in May.

Texas retail gas prices drop 4 cents this week

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Retail gasoline prices across Texas have dropped 4 cents this week.

AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price at the pump fell to $3.53. The national average also has fallen, down to $3.64.

The association survey found Beaumont has the cheapest gasoline statewide at $3.39 per gallon. Dallas and Fort Worth have the most expensive retail gasoline in Texas at $3.62 per gallon.

Texas drivers on average are paying 28 cents less than this time last year.

AAA says it's too soon to determine whether retail prices have peaked for the spring because there's still refinery maintenance to be completed and much of the country has yet to transition to summer-blend gasoline.

Supporters of both sides of the gun debate gather outside the National Shooting Sports Foundation headquarters in Newtown, Conn., Thursday, March 28, 2013. Search warrants released Thursday, March 28, 2013, revealed that an arsenal of weapons including guns, more than a thousand rounds of ammunition, a bayonet and several swords was seized at Adam Lanza's home. (AP) ? When Adam Lanza walked out of his house for the last time, he left behind firearms and knives and more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition ? taking only four guns. They would suffice.

He loaded the weapons into his car, drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School, blasted his way into the building and within five minutes fired off 154 shots with a Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle. Having slaughtered 20 first-graders and six educators, he killed himself with a shot from a Glock handgun. He still had more than 100 rifle bullets at hand.

Warrants released Thursday provide the most insight to date into the world of the 20-year-old gunman, a recluse who played violent video games in a house packed with weaponry that was all too real. The inventory of items found in the spacious, colonial-style home included books on autism, a vast array of weapon paraphernalia and images of what appears to be a dead person covered with plastic and blood.

The weapons used in the shooting had all apparently been purchased by Lanza's mother, Nancy, with whom he lived, said prosecutor Stephen J. Sedensky III, in a statement accompanying the warrants.

She was found dead in her bed; Adam Lanza had shot her the morning of the massacre, Dec. 14. Authorities also found a gun safe in his bedroom and a holiday card from Nancy Lanza containing a check made out to her son for the purchase of yet another firearm.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy expressed incredulity over the access that the troubled young man had to a cache of weapons.

"There are parts of this story that are unfathomable," he said. "How anyone would have maintained that household that way is difficult to understand."

Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son, Daniel, was killed at Sandy Hook, said he was not surprised by anything revealed Thursday.

"Most of this is pretty high level stuff that we were aware of already and it just reminds me of what happened, that a gunman stormed his way into an elementary school and shot to death 26 people, 20 of which were first-grade boys and girls," Barden said.

The shooting elevated gun safety to the top of President Barack Obama's agenda; at an event in Washington on Thursday, joined by the families of four children killed at Sandy Hook, he urged lawmakers not to get "squishy" in the face of opposition to gun control.

"Shame on us if we've forgotten," Obama said. "I haven't forgotten those kids."

The debate has extended to Newtown, a rural community of 27,000 people in western Connecticut that is also home to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. A protest and counter-protest were held outside the foundation's offices Thursday.

If it's possible to determine a motive for the massacre, there may be clues in Adam Lanza's journals, which state police seized from the house and turned over to the FBI for analysis. But authorities say that so far no conclusions have been reached. Sedensky estimated that the investigation will be finished this summer.

At the Lanza house, investigators found books about autism and Asperger's syndrome, as well as one with tabbed pages titled "Train Your Brain to Get Happy." Adam Lanza was said to have been diagnosed with Asperger's, an autism-like disorder that is not associated with violence.

But the warrants also reveal an intense interest in weaponry and violence.

A gun locker in the house was open when police arrived in the aftermath of the shootings, and there was no sign it had been broken into.

Investigators found a 7-foot pole with a blade on one side and a spear on another, a metal bayonet, three samurai swords, a .323-caliber bolt-action rifle, a .22-caliber Savage Mark II rifle and a .22-caliber Volcanic starter pistol. There was a military-style uniform in Lanza's bedroom; literature seized from the house included a news article on a 2008 shooting at Northern Illinois University and a National Rifle Association guide to pistol shooting.

News outlets including The Associated Press reported previously that Lanza showed interest in other mass killings. Some, including The Hartford Courant, reported that he had a particular interest in Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in twin attacks in 2011 in Norway's worst peacetime massacre.

In a duffel bag, investigators found ear and eye protection, binoculars, numerous paper targets and an NRA certificate that belonged to Adam Lanza. The NRA said Lanza was not a member.

An unnamed person told investigators that Lanza was an avid gamer who played "Call of Duty" and rarely left his home. The affidavit, which is partially blacked out, also has that person saying that Sandy Hook, the school Lanza attended as a child, was his "life."

On the day of the massacre, Lanza took two loaded handguns to the school along with the Bushmaster rifle. A fourth gun, a loaded 12-gauge Saiga shotgun, was found in the passenger compartment of his Honda Civic, along with 70 shotgun rounds.

Lanza went through six 30-round magazines for the Bushmaster, although half of them were not completely empty, and police said he had three other 30-round magazines in addition to one that was in the rifle.

A judge's order to seal the warrants expired on Wednesday, and a Danbury Superior Court judge granted a request by Sedensky to withhold some details. Sedensky asked to redact the name of a witness, saying the person's safety might be jeopardized if the name were disclosed. He also asked that the release not include other information such as telephone numbers, serial numbers on items found and a few paragraphs of an affidavit.

Malloy, a Democrat in his first term as governor, said the fact that Lanza left smaller magazines at the house should boost support for a state ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines.

"That somebody could get 154 shots off in less than five minutes, kill 20 children and six adults, is disturbing," Malloy said.

Connecticut House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero Jr., a Republican, said he expects the General Assembly will be ready to vote next week, possibly Wednesday, on a package addressing gun control and other issues raised by the shooting.

Same-sex couple leaves the US because of DOMA

>>> let me bring in brandon pearlburg. an american living in london with his foreign-born partner. the couple had to move in order to stay together because of doma . thank you for joining me.

>> thank you.

>> first of all, what is your impression of today. with the excerpts and analysis coming out regarding justices and their comments, brandon ?

>> well, i don't want it make any predecks, but we know every time in our country's history that there's been an expansion of civil rights , that has been a good thing for the population as a whole, and those have been moments that we look back upon with tremendous national pride . so i guess i would say i'm cautiously opt moistic that this is going to to be another one of those moments.

>> you mentioned national pride . you are an american citizen . you love this country. as i read, nearly seven years ago you decided you could no longer live here based on love, if you will. tell me a little bit about what happened and how you made this decision to leave your home and go to london .

>> well, what happened for me was that in the fall of 2011 , i had been with my same sex british partner for just about seven years then. we've been together another year now. and he was living in the states with me pursuant to an employer sponsored visa. but those visas have expiration date . the way you stay in the country is with a green card . he wasn't going to to get a green ward from his employer. doma made it so he wouldn't have a green card through me. so i had to make the decision whether or not i would live my life in the country that i love or move to england and live with the person that i love. i chose the latter. january of last year we moved to the uk. while i don't regret that decision at all, this has been the most difficult and humbling period of my entire life.

>> as i understand it, you left your law firm , rented out your place, said good-bye to all of your friend and family and you end up there in london . and yours is not a situation where you're in a bubble. there are others, and in fact, profiled in a new york times article not very long ago that how many americans have done the same thing. forced to leave the united states as a result of doma .

>> and we're the lucky ones tp there are so many people who don't have england or canada or holland or country like that to o go to. and families are split apart. and you can imagine if there are children involved, that what that means. and financially, what that means. i add career i was forced to leave. i was finally getting to the place in my adult hood where i was reaching professional success and i a i arrived here. for 11 months i couldn't find work. i went on interview after interview after interview but i lacked london experience. so i was pushed down to the bottom of the ladder unfairly. this is what doma maept for me.

>> if doma is struck down, will that mean you and your partner would be married in new york, for example, and move back here?

>> you know, that's a difficult question for me to answer. obviously, there's a lot that goes into uprooting, both ways you go across the atlantic. that's a decision my partner and i would have to take after reflecting a lot. but you can't just snap your fingers and get your life back. this wasn't a blip. this was a major, major hardship and sacrifice that i've had to endure and that so many other people have had to endure.

>> brandon , thank you so much for coming on to dois cuss your life and as you point out would be make this major life decision as a result of the defensive marriage act . thank you for your time. we will keep up-to-date with you.

>> thank you.
