Gator Bowl win over Ohio State boosts Florida Gators? outlook

Winning the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl meant more to Florida than just avoiding another loss in a season filled with them.

With the victory, the Gators notched their 24th winning season in row, and their fourth consecutive bowl win ? a first in UF history. The Gators also finished above .500 at 7-6 and avoided becoming the first losing team since 1979. And with the win, the Gators closed out all of the Urban Meyer talk, at least for a while.

Still, Florida?s 24-17 win against Ohio State on Monday in front of 61,312 at EverBank Field was just the Gators? third win since September. And coach Will Muschamp, after receiving his first Gatorade bath in orange and blue, said the results of his first season in Gainesville fell well short of the expectations.

?I think the realization of this whole thing, if you really want to see big picture, is in the last two years at the University of Florida we?re 15-11. That?s unacceptable,? Muschamp said. ?We had a guy [Meyer] who won two national championships, a heck of a football coach. We?re one game?s difference from last year. We?re 7-6, we were 8-5 last year.?

?Sometimes I think you?ve got to put your realistic glasses on about where you are and what you are as a program right at this point, and it?s not where we?re going to be very long ? I can assure you of that. We?re moving in the right direction.?

The story of Monday?s win was the defense and special teams, which figure to be the strength of the team going forward.

Florida held Ohio State to 17 points, recorded 12 tackles for loss and forced two turnovers while also returning a blocked kick and a kickoff for touchdowns. The Gators controlled much of the game because of their ability to get after mobile quarterback Braxton Miller all afternoon, sacking him a season-high six times.

Muschamp compared Miller with former Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor, saying, ?We had to do some things to create edges and not let him escape as much.?

Defense rising

Despite a lack of buzz surrounding the unit, the Gators entered the game with a defense ranked ninth in the nation. The defense struggled during a four-game losing streak in October but came on late, holding FSU to just 95 total yards in the regular-season finale and again stepping up in Monday?s bowl win.

Senior quarterback John Brantley finished his career as a Gator with a 12-of-16 performance with one touchdown and an interception. Brantley connected with fellow departing senior Deonte Thompson for a 17-yard strike to open the scoring in the first quarter.

He also fumbled the ball twice in the first half, with the second leading to Ohio State?s first touchdown of the afternoon ? a DeVier Posey touchdown catch from Miller that tied the game at 7.

But wide receiver Andre Debose returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to put Florida ahead for good.

Debose caught the kick in the corner and followed blockers untouched 99 yards for the score. The play set a new Gator Bowl record for the longest play in the history of the bowl game and set up Debose to win the Most Valuable Player award.

?I just kind of followed [running back Jeff] Demps, and he led me to the promised land, to the touchdown,? Debose said. ?There?s no feeling like it.?

2012 Rose Bowl: J.R. Martinez Named 2012 Tournament Of Roses Parade Grand Marshall

The Rose Bowl, dubbed "The Granddaddy of them All," will be played between the Wisconsin Badgers and Oregon Ducks, the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions. But, of course, it's not all about football. The Rose Bowl has more pageantry leading up to it than all other bowl games combined. I'm talking, of course, about the Tournament of Roses Parade.

The parade was a tradition that started in 1890 when Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club organized it as a New Years celebration. To help fund the parade, the Rose Bowl football game came into being in 1902, making it the oldest bowl game in the country. Now the parade serves as an opening celebration for the big game and is seen by millions on TV every year.

Each year, a Grand Marshall is selected by the President of the Tournament. Former Grand Marshalls have included Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bob Hope and Richard Nixon. The 2012 Grand Marshall will be J.R. Martinez, a former U.S. Army infantryman and currently an actor and motivational speaker. Martinez suffered burns over 40 percent of his body while serving in Iraq in 2003. While he was recovering from his wounds, he traveled around the country as a motivational speaker to many organizations including corporations, schools and military groups. He stars on the daytime drama All My Children and was the winner of Dancing With The Stars' 13th season on ABC.

The parade will start at 8 a.m. PT and will feature 43 floats, 21 bands and approximately 400 horses. To watch the festivities, tune into NBC, ABC, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, RFD-EV, Tribune, Univision and Sky Link TV.

For more information on the game, check out the Badgers' SB Nation site, Bucky's 5th Quarter, and the Ducks' site, Addicted To Quack.

Make a Free Kitchen Air Freshener with Fruit Peels/Cores [Kitchen Hacks]

Make a Free Kitchen Air Freshener with Fruit Peels/CoresReal Estate agents often bake a log of cookie dough to make houses smell great when they're trying to sell. Take advantage of your oven and make great your kitchen smell wonderful by baking apple cores, banana peels, or other fruit discards at a low temperature.

Green living weblog Re-Nest suggests mixing one ground spice with your fruit to make the house smell like a fresh pie. You'll need something to hold your fruit peels that is safe to heat; fold aluminum foil or wax paper into a basic container as shown in the photo above. Add your fruit discards and sprinkle with a pinch of a spice. Then spray the fruit and spice with an oil spray to keep it from burning. Put that in your oven at 200-degrees Fahrenheit for however long you wish.

The fruit scent will stick around for nearly two hours after you turn the oven off and you really don't want to open the oven door before those two hours have gone by or you will risk getting smoke in your kitchen.

Putin urges acceleration of South Stream (AP)

MOSCOW ? Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday instructed gas giant Gazprom to speed up the construction of a gas pipeline under the Black Sea in an apparent attempt to put pressure on Ukraine, the current chief export route for Russia.

The South Stream project, co-owned by Gazprom, France's EdF, Italy's Eni and Germany's Wintershall, is meant to ship Russian natural gas to southern and eastern Europe.

The pipeline, which is expected to start operating in 2015, would ship up to 63 billion cubic meters (2 trillion cubic feet) of gas annually to Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria and Italy in one leg and Croatia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey in a second. This week, Moscow secured a key approval from Turkey to go ahead with the construction.

The 15 billion-euro South Stream is rivaling the European Union-backed Nabucco pipeline that's slated to ship gas from the Caspian region to Austria.

Putin told Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller in televised comments that "it would be advisable" to start building the pipeline at the end of next year, not in 2013.

The move is likely to put pressure on Ukraine, currently Russia's chief gas export route.

Miller also said that the $20 billion Ukraine is seeking for the pipeline is too high because it will require 2 to 8 billion euros ($2.5-10 billion).

Continuous disagreement between Moscow and Kiev, which has led to two gas wars, largely stems from Moscow striving to control, or at least manage, the export pipeline crossing Ukraine. Kiev in return is seeking lower gas prices.

Ukraine is currently paying about $400 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas, but wants to pay $250. The talks have so far failed to produce a deal and a new round is set for mid-January.

A price discount for Ukraine could amount to $9 billion for an annual shipment, Miller said Friday.

Although his order regarding South Stream seems to be aimed to push pressure on Ukraine at the upcoming gas talks, Putin still added that it expects Ukraine to remain an important gas route for Russia.

Ukraine's prime minister Mykola Azarov on Thursday threatened that his government may take Gazprom to court if Moscow doesn't agree to a lower price at the talks. It was not immediately clear, however, what could make the legal grounds of that lawsuit.

U.S. Blacks More Likely to Die of Colon Cancer Than Whites: Study (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Although colorectal cancer death rates in the United States have fallen across the board over the last 20 years, the dip has been smaller among blacks than whites, a new study indicates.

Specifically, the racial spread in death rate trends appears to be most notable among patients diagnosed with the most advanced stage of the disease, according to the results of an investigation by the American Cancer Society (ACS).

"The widening racial disparity for [advanced]-stage has a disproportionate impact on overall colorectal cancer mortality disparities because [advanced]-stage accounts for approximately 60 percent of the overall black-white mortality disparity," the study authors explained in an ACS news release.

The study team, led by Dr. Anthony Robbins, pointed out that up until 1980, black Americans were actually less likely to die from colorectal cancer overall than whites. Since then, however, the availability of ever-better screening and treatment options has turned that dynamic on its head. The result: by 2007, the rate of death among blacks was 44 percent greater than that among whites.

The reason, the authors suggested, may be that black patients do not seem to be getting screened or treated as often and as aggressively as white patients.

The aim of the current ACS study was to find out how exactly racial differences in plummeting death rates have been playing out with respect to disease progression: namely, early-stage (in which cancer is localized); mid-stage (in which cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes); and late-stage (in which the cancer is made its way throughout the patient's body).

To explore that question, the team analyzed two decades of information that had already been gathered by the U.S. National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program database.

The review, released online Dec. 19 in advance of print publication in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, revealed that while racial differences in death rate declines were apparent at every stage of disease, the divide was most stark among late-stage patients.

For example, while early-stage white patients experienced a roughly 30 percent drop in death rates over the last 20 years, their black peers experienced about a 13 percent decline. Among mid-stage patients, the drop was almost 49 percent among whites versus 34 percent among blacks.

But for those with the most advanced stage of disease, the gap was even greater: death rates had dropped by nearly 33 percent among whites compared with just under 5 percent among blacks, the investigators found.

The authors noted that black Americans tend to be screened less often, are less likely to have timely follow-ups when they are screened, and are generally less well informed when it comes to the latest and best treatment options. The researchers suggested that to rectify the problem, an effort should be made to bump up early-stage detection of colorectal cancer among black patients.

Another Free Web-Hosted Personal Finance App

I've written about a couple of web-based personal finance managers recently, so here's a final one to round off the trilogy.

Out Of The Dark (OOTD) is an online service designed to help you manage your money. ?Just enter details of what comes in, and what you spend it on, and the site's rich collection of reports and visualisations will help to ensure that you know where all your money is going.

You can reach the site at www.myootd.org. ?Access is free, and you simply need to enter an email address and password in order to register. ?Like most online services of this kind, there's no facility to initiate bank transfers or store details of bank accounts, so your money remains safe. ?As should your data too, of course, though I was slightly disappointed to see that my "welcome to OOTD" email contained a reminder of my password in plain text. ?Quite how the system knows this, if ?it's encrypting passwords before it stores them, is something that I intend to find out.

Still, OOTD seems like a useful system, especially as it's also available to use on smartphones so that you can track your finances from wherever you are. ?My thanks to user?Hareiana for telling me about it.
