Now?s the time to strike a blow against the freshman fifteen. Freshman legendarily put on fifteen pounds their first year of school because they start spending a lot of time in front of a computer. Actually, everybody gets that tight feeling in their clothes ? students, teachers, freshmen, and sophomores! So before you need help getting out of your chair, turn off the computer and head over the Seminole Recreation Center.
The Seminole Recreation Center is the large, white buildings just south of the Seminole campus entrance. They?re home to several? workout facilities that, as SPC students, you can use for FREE! Get your Guest Pass in the Provost?s Office (UP Building, 2nd floor).
Inside, you?ll find the Fitness Center, an air-conditioned workout room with a whole range of weight machines as well as stationary bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills. There?s a 30-minute limit on the treadmills if there are people waiting, but when this reporter went during the afternoon, the crowd was light with no waits on equipment. If you forget your iPod, there?s a radio playing classic 70?s rock or you can plug your headphones into a TV connection on the treadmills to catch your favorite program. To learn how to use the weight machines safely, there?s an Orientation class every Thursday from 10-11 a.m. and once a month in the evenings.
The Recreation Center also provides clean locker rooms and showers, so you can workout between classes.? For those looking for other types of exercise, the Family Aquatic Center at the back of the building features a 6-lane, Junior Olympic-sized pool opened Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday through October. The gym itself is open for pickup games every evening except Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. and there are leagues and classes for basketball, volleyball, racquetball and pickleball ? a combination of tennis, badminton and racquetball.
When joining in the offered programs and classes, SPC students only have to pay for the class, not the Recreation Center membership fees. Just ask at the front desk ? the staff is very friendly and happy to help. Classes include hobbies such as painting, wood carving, and comic book drawing, not just athletics.
So don?t let the freshman fifteen overwhelm you. Take a break from your studies and head to the Recreation Center. You?ll feel better, you?ll look better, and you?ll probably study better when you get back to your books! If you can?t make it to Seminole, check out the gym facilities on the campus nearest you.
