Coach revives 12-year-old during basketball practice in Salem

SALEM, Ore. - A 12-year-old boy collapsed during basketball practice Friday evening and was revived by one of his coaches, according to the Marion County Sheriff?s Office.

Coach Lee Sampson performed CPR on Isaac Arzate after he collapsed while resting on the sidelines at Adam Scott Elementary School at about 7 p.m. The boy was stabilized at Salem Hospital and then taken to Doernbecher Children?s Hospital in Portland. According to the hospital Saturday, Arzate is in critical condition.

The sixth-grader is from Adam Stephens School. He began to feel winded during a drill and asked his coaches to rest. After five minutes, he returned to practice but began feeling ill again. His coaches excused him from the rest of practice and Arzate was watching the other kids practice when he collapsed.

"Isaac was having difficulty breathing and his pulse was weak. Coach Sampson did what coaches are trained to do. He likely saved his life," said Deputy Andrew Derschon.

Two other coaches, including Arzate's stepfather, helped Sampson by calling 911 and taking the rest of the children outside to wait for arriving medics.

"I have nephews who are high school and junior high and they all play sports so it is kind of scary to see all these stories popping up with healthy kids dropping to the ground for no reason," said parent AJ Quitoriano.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the coaches are not school district employees but are with Skyball, which is part of Salem-Keizer Youth Basketball Inc. It is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. They are not required to know CPR.

The incident comes just days after 14-year-old Cody Sherrell collapsed during his basketball practice at a La Center, Wash. elementary school. Doctors said Sherrell, while having no history of heart problems, suffered a heart attack.

He was also revived by one of his coaches. He was still in critical condition as of Saturday.
