South Korea accuses North Korea of launching cyberattack against conservative Seoul newspaper

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea says North Korea was behind a cyberattack against a conservative Seoul newspaper critical of Pyongyang.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that North Korean hackers distorted the website of the mass-circulation JoongAng Ilbo newspaper and deleted some data from the paper's news filing and production system last June.

The paper quickly restored the system and its newspaper production was done without any major problem.

Police said an IP address used in the cyberattack belongs to a North Korean government ministry. Police say the finding was made after analyzing data from an international organization that manages the assignment of IP addresses.

South Korea has accused North Korea of mounting other cyberattacks in the past few years. The North has denied those charges.
